Junior Hockey FAQs

When your child starts a new sport there are lots of questions. Below are the answers to some the most frequently asked questions. If you can’t find the answer below please drop us a line harrowhcjuniors@hotmail.co.uk

We ask for registration and payment before you attend to secure your place. If your child doesn’t like it or changes their mind we will happily provide a pro rata refund.

We want hockey to be available to everyone without barriers. Please do get in touch with us if this is a problem.

We are not able to accept Childcare vouchers

Sorry we do not offer discounts for siblings.

If your child is only attending training no. Once they start playing matches they will need the Harrow socks, navy shorts / skort and if wearing a baselayer (something under shirts to keep warm) these must be navy. We provide club match shirts.

The majority of our kit can be ordered via our online form, a payment request for the kit will be put on SPOND and once payment is made our volunteers will collate your kit and arrange to get it to your training session. For our older juniors we have a wider range of club outerwear which can be ordered direct with Kukri.

We have plenty of sticks in a range of sizes which can be borrowed at training sessions. If playing matches you will need a stick – these can be borrowed but it is your responsibility to ask the coach at the training session before the match if you can take one – the equipment is all kept at the pitch and this is not always accessible.

There are a wide range of sticks on the market and a wide price range. For younger players there is no need to spend a huge amount on a stick. The general rule is to get a stick that comes up to your hip or just above. High street stores such as Sport Direct do stock these and there is a variety of online stores.

Yes we do. This is usually available in the Tea Room on Sunday mornings, we ask that you make a donation if you can but its not essential.

When we operate a waiting list we review places in groups monthly. Places are affected by number of coaches and pitch space we have. Historically we have been able to offer the majority of places at the start of the season September. Occasionally places come up during the season when for example people move house or decide not to continue.

Once children are ready we aim to give them all match experience at the appropriate level. Match information is posted as an event on SPOND and we ask that you respond to confirm if your child can play promptly.

Not a problem just decline the training event on SPOND so the coach is aware. Please note we do not refund for missed sessions.

Please don’t just decline on SPOND as the coaches may already be coaching sessions, use the direct message function on SPOND to contact your coach and decline on SPOND.

YES! On the whole we play in all weathers – yes in the rain ???? If there is extreme weather that means the pitch is unfit or it would be dangerous to play you will be informed via SPOND so please check before you leave home.

All clubs and schools are invited annually to nominate players they feel are ready to the England Hockey Player Pathway. The pathway is for players from Under 13 – U17.

You can either speak to coaches at the end of the session or direct message them via SPOND.

Membership fees include both sessions, which we recommend your child attends. We cannot give discounts for children who only attend one weekly session.

Our app SPOND has a messaging facility which will allow you to contact your child’s group and ask if anyone can assist with transport for Away matches.

Once you have paid your membership fee you will be sent a link to join SPOND – we find the app is the best way to ensure you keep upto date.

Hockey is a winter sport in the UK and the season runs September to March. The pitch we use is used for tennis during the summer term. We occasionally run sessions at another local pitch out of season these are communicated via SPOND. We recommend The Hockey Lab for coaching sessions in the school holidays.
